Bangkok Nightlife for the First Time

Pick one area and stay in it. Bangkok's nightlife districts are twenty to forty minutes apart in traffic, so a night spent moving between them is mostly a night spent in a car. Decide first what kind of evening you want — large clubs, cocktail bars, cheap street drinking or a show — and the area follows from that, because no district does all four well.

Choose the area before anything else

The single decision that shapes a Bangkok night is which district you commit to. They are not interchangeable and they are not close together.

RCA is a purpose-built strip of large clubs on one walkable road, which makes it the easiest area to move around once you are there. Thonglor is upmarket bars and rooftops where you sit down and talk. Khao San is street drinking at the lowest prices in the city. Silom is the centre of LGBTQ+ nightlife. Sukhumvit is the convenient spine along the train line, and the most spread out.

Timing is the mistake most first-timers make

Bangkok starts late. Most venues open around 9 PM and are close to empty until 11, so arriving early buys you an expensive drink in a quiet room rather than a head start.

The corollary matters more: the trains stop before the clubs do. The BTS and MRT finish around midnight, which is roughly when the night begins, so the journey home is by road whatever you planned.

What to have with you

Very little, but the few things matter.

—Cash — accepted everywhere, unlike cards, and essential for taxis
—Passport or a photo of it — some doors ask for ID and will not accept a driving licence
—A ride app already installed and working, which is much easier to arrange on hotel wifi than at 3 AM on a kerb
