The Bangkok Nightlife Year

Four dates change what a night out in Bangkok looks like, and only one of them is New Year. Songkran in April closes streets and rewrites the rules for a week. Pride at the turn of May into June fills Silom. The 31 December countdown draws six-figure crowds to one intersection. Loy Krathong in November moves the city to the water. Everything else is a normal Tuesday.

April — Songkran

Thai New Year, 13 to 15 April, and the one that most changes a visit. Water fighting takes over whole streets during the day, and the rules governing it — zones, closing times, alcohol within those zones — are set fresh each year rather than fixed.

It is also one of the busiest weeks in the Thai calendar for accommodation, so it wants booking well ahead.

Late May into June — Pride

Centred on Silom, the LGBTQ+ nightlife district, and now at a scale that affects the whole city centre for the week rather than one soi. The parade closes roads across Silom and Rama I for much of a day.

RCA is unaffected and a straightforward taxi away if you want the nightlife without the crowds.

November — Loy Krathong

The festival of floating krathongs, held on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, which usually falls in November. The date moves with the lunar calendar, so check the year rather than assuming.

It draws people to the riverside and to any water in the city, which makes it a night for the Chao Phraya rather than for a club strip.

31 December — the countdown

The largest single night of the year. The CentralWorld countdown is the focal point and draws crowds well into six figures, with roads around it closed and the surrounding BTS stations under heavy load. The riverside is the other major fireworks vantage.

If crowds are not the appeal, this is the night the club strips make most sense — the same city, a fraction of the crush.

Christmas, and everything else

Christmas is not a public holiday in Thailand, which is a Buddhist-majority country. Malls decorate heavily and hotels run dinners, but 25 December is a working day and the nightlife runs as normal.

That makes it one of the easier nights of the year to go out: festive if you want it, and otherwise a Thursday.
