How Bangkok Transport Works

Bangkok has good rail and it does not go everywhere. The BTS Skytrain and the MRT underground cover the central spine and are the fastest way across town in traffic — but they are run by different operators, so there is no single card that works on both, and they stop around midnight. Anywhere off the lines, including RCA, finishes by road.

The systems, and how they differ

The BTS Skytrain runs on elevated track through the commercial centre and along Sukhumvit. The MRT runs underground and loops through areas the BTS does not reach, including Huai Khwang. They interchange at several stations but are operated separately.

The Airport Rail Link connects Suvarnabhumi airport to the city and interchanges with the MRT at Phetchaburi. Don Mueang, the other airport, has no equivalent link.

Chao Phraya river boats are a genuine transport option rather than a novelty, and they are immune to traffic, which on some routes makes them the fastest choice.

Ticketing is the part that surprises people

There is no single travel card covering everything. The BTS and MRT sell their own stored-value cards and single-journey tickets, and a card for one does not work on the other.

For a short visit this matters less than it sounds: single tickets work fine, and the ride apps cover everything the rail does not. It is worth knowing in advance so you are not looking for a card that does not exist.

Where the network stops

Two limits shape a night out. The first is time — services finish around midnight, which is roughly when the nightlife strips fill, so the journey home is by road whatever you planned on the way out.

The second is coverage. RCA has no station. MRT Phetchaburi is the nearest, and the last stretch is a taxi or motorbike. Khao San has no station either. Thonglor and Silom are well served; Sukhumvit is the best connected of all the nightlife districts, which is the main practical argument for staying there.
