What it actually is
Open-air terraces on the upper floors of hotels and office towers, serving cocktails at prices closer to London than to RCA. The draw is the view rather than the music, and most are seated rather than standing. Several sell reservations that bundle a table with round-trip transfer, which is worth it mainly because getting a taxi to the right tower entrance is fiddlier than it sounds.
Who it suits
A first night in Bangkok, a couple, a group wanting one memorable hour before dinner, or anyone who wants the skyline photograph. It is also the easiest Bangkok nightlife to do sober.
Who it doesn't
Dancing, a late night, or a budget evening. Rooftops wind down while RCA is filling up, and one round can cost what a whole night on the strip does.
