Area guide

Bangkok nightlife areas, compared

Bangkok has five nightlife districts worth knowing, and they are not interchangeable. RCA is the club strip. Thonglor is upmarket bars and rooftops. Khao San is backpacker cheap. Silom is the LGBTQ+ centre. Sukhumvit is the convenient spine along the BTS. Pick one for the night — traffic between districts runs 20–40 minutes, which makes hopping a waste of the evening.

In more detail

RCA (Royal City Avenue)

RCA is a single road on Rama IX Road in Huai Khwang lined with large clubs and bars. Because everything sits side by side, moving between three or four venues in a night is normal. It is the best area in Bangkok for big-room clubbing, and the cheapest of the major nightlife districts for entry and bottles.

Thonglor

Thonglor runs north from Sukhumvit Soi 55 and is Bangkok's most upmarket nightlife strip. It skews bars, rooftops and speakeasies rather than large clubs, draws a mixed expat and Thai crowd, and costs noticeably more than RCA for the same night out.

Sukhumvit

Sukhumvit is less a district than a corridor — bars, clubs and rooftops spread along the BTS line from Nana to Ekkamai. It is the easiest area to reach and the most varied, but nothing is concentrated the way RCA or Khao San is.

Khao San Road

Khao San Road and the surrounding lanes are Bangkok's backpacker nightlife centre — street bars, buckets, live music and the cheapest drinks of any district here. Loud, crowded, and completely different in character from RCA.

Silom

Silom is the centre of Bangkok's LGBTQ+ nightlife, concentrated around Soi 2 and Soi 4, alongside a business-district bar scene that runs earlier in the evening. Soi 4 starts early; Soi 2 runs latest.

Frequently asked questions

Which area of Bangkok is best for nightlife?

It depends what you want. RCA is the best area for large clubs and dancing, and the cheapest of the major districts. Thonglor is the upmarket bar and rooftop scene. Khao San is backpacker nightlife with the cheapest drinks. Silom is the LGBTQ+ centre. Sukhumvit is the most convenient because everything sits on the BTS line.

Is RCA better than Thonglor?

For clubbing, yes — RCA has the large rooms and a crowd that is there to dance, and it costs less. Thonglor is better for cocktails, rooftops and a night where you talk rather than shout.

Which Bangkok nightlife area is cheapest?

Khao San for drinks, RCA for clubs. Thonglor is the most expensive of the main areas.

Can I visit more than one area in a night?

Within an area, yes — RCA and Khao San are both single strips you can walk. Between areas, less so: Bangkok traffic means 20–40 minutes between districts, so most people pick one and stay.

Which area is easiest to reach without a taxi?

Sukhumvit and Thonglor, both on the BTS Sukhumvit line. RCA and Khao San are not near a station, so you will need a Grab or taxi either way.
