Songkran and Bangkok Nightlife

Songkran, Thai New Year, runs 13 to 15 April and is a public holiday, with the surrounding days often absorbed into it. For nightlife the important thing is that the rules are set fresh each year rather than fixed: in 2026 Bangkok made every official water-splashing zone alcohol-free and required play to stop at 22:00. Plan an evening around what has been announced for the year you are travelling, not around what happened last time.

Why nobody can tell you the rules in advance

Songkran is regulated year by year. Water-zone boundaries, closing times and alcohol rules within those zones are announced ahead of each festival rather than carried over, and they have changed materially between years.

For 2026, Bangkok designated official water zones as alcohol-free and required splashing to end at 22:00. That is a fact about 2026. Anyone telling you confidently what April 2027 will allow is guessing, so treat the current year's announcement as the only reliable source and check it close to travelling.

What it does to an ordinary night out

The festival is a daytime event. Water fighting runs through the afternoon and, where zones apply, stops in the evening — which leaves the normal nightlife hours largely intact, subject to whatever that year's rules say.

The practical friction is transport and crowds rather than closures. Getting across the city is slower, the areas around the main water zones are dense, and arriving anywhere dry is not realistic if your route passes through one.
