Sukhumvit nightlife

Sukhumvit is less a district than a corridor — bars, clubs and rooftops spread along the BTS line from Nana to Ekkamai. It is the easiest area to reach and the most varied, but nothing is concentrated the way RCA or Khao San is.

Sukhumvit vs RCA

The difference is concentration. RCA puts everything on one road, so you pick the strip and then pick venues once you are there. Sukhumvit spreads across several kilometres of BTS line, so you pick a soi first and the night is shaped by that choice — Nana, Asok, Soi 11 and Ekkamai are not one district so much as several, sharing a train line. Sukhumvit is the easier area to stay in and the harder one to have a specific kind of night in, because what you get depends entirely on which stop you get off at.

Who goes

The most mixed and the most tourist-heavy of the five, which follows from the hotels. It changes completely between sois: some stretches are almost entirely visitors, others are largely people who live nearby.

What it costs

Wide range, and the widest of any district here. Individual venues run from cheaper than RCA to considerably more expensive than Thonglor, sometimes within a few hundred metres of each other. There is no useful district-wide figure.

How the night runs

Runs latest where it is densest and earliest where it is residential. Because venues are spread out, moving between two or three in a night usually means a taxi rather than a walk — the opposite of RCA.

Getting home

The easiest district to leave. The BTS covers it until roughly midnight, and after that Grab is straightforward because the main road is wide and easy to be picked up on. This is the practical argument for staying here even if you go out elsewhere.

Pick Sukhumvit for

  • Staying somewhere with easy transport to everywhere else
  • A first trip, when you do not yet know which area you want
  • Variety across one night without committing to a scene
  • Getting home without planning

Go elsewhere if

you want a walkable strip where the venues sit side by side. That is RCA and Khao San; Sukhumvit is a corridor, not a strip.

Getting there

BTS Sukhumvit line. Almost every venue is walkable from a station, which is the main reason people stay here.

Questions

Is Sukhumvit a good area for nightlife?

It is the most convenient and the most varied, because it runs along the BTS from Nana to Ekkamai. It is not concentrated — venues are spread over several kilometres, so a night usually means picking one soi rather than roaming.

Should I stay in Sukhumvit or near RCA?

Sukhumvit is the easier base: it is on the BTS, has the most hotels, and getting home is simple. RCA is better if clubbing is the main purpose of the trip, because you can walk between venues and back to your room.

How far is RCA from Sukhumvit?

Roughly 15–25 minutes by Grab or taxi depending on traffic and where on Sukhumvit you start. RCA is not on a train line, so the trip is by road.

What this page does not cover

This is an orientation page. We list individual venues for RCA, where we cover 14 of them in detail, and not yet for Sukhumvit — so this page describes the area rather than naming bars we cannot yet stand behind.
